to win a war, it is necessary to liberate a certain strategic areas of the enemy or to destruct their forces completely. halting the iraqi army prevented them from achieving their goals, however, it didn't mean as a military defeat for them, especially that iraq had an important part of the iranian areas and border towns in his occupation and was able to put iran under pressure to gain a certain concessions. so, once the iraqi army was crippled, it was necessary the occupied territories to be liberated and secured. this situation in the northwest was a particular one because in addition to dealing with the iraqi military forces, the friendly forces were firstly needed to fight with opposition parties as the operational arm of the iraqi army in the area. due to this, clearing the areas of activity of the counter-revolution groups was considered as an introduction to the liberation of occupied territories and to the countering the iraqi army. in order to launch a military attack against the enemy within the strategy of liberating the occupied territories and securing the international borders as well as inflicting some blows on the enemy, political imperatives led to the planning a series of operations. among these operations, the operation muhammad al rasul allah (pbuh) was implemented in the winter of 1981 in the northwestern area and on the paveh-nosoud axis. the operation had a particular strategic importance because it was the first semi-intensive operation in this axis and its transboundary objectives required the friendly forces to cross the borders and enter into the iraqi territory during the stage of liberation the occupied territories. this operation will be analyzed in this study.
